Happy Friday! I hope you are having a great week! Almost 17 years ago I purchased my home with a focused mindset. Oprah once said in an interview "the best part of being wealthy is owning real estate!" That statement changed my life and the way I viewed ownership. I analyzed that statement and she didn't say paying on real estate she said owning real estate.
Most times the lender will convince borrowers that they need to own things like vehicles. For example, when a person gets a loan for a vehicle they will pay on that loan for 3 to 5 years then they own it. However, when a person borrows money to purchase a home that lender extends the loan for 30 years. What's the difference in the two loans? Well, a vehicle is a liability to the lender because vehicles depreciate so quickly; therefore, they do not want it on their books for a long time. That's why the payoff time is so much shorter than a home. A home is asset which means it increases in most cases in value. Therefore, the lender prefers to have this type of asset on their books verses the borrower's books for as long as possible. When you add 30 years to your age that you committed to paying a home loan that equates to most of someone's entire life. Especially, if you purchase the home in your later years.
My question to my clients is why not view your home just like the lender views it. As an asset, therefore pay it off as quick as possible or buy it with cash if you can afford to. Either way,you are positioning yourself to obtain true ownership, increase your net worth, and build financial freedom. I'm so grateful I understood what Oprah was saying so many years ago about owning real estate. It's a powerful tool when you become an owner of your assets!
As always, thank you for reading and have a blessed weekend
